Making Drop-Offs Easier: The Power of a Consistent Goodbye ๐ฟ
Starting childcare is a big transition for children and families. Tears at drop-off are completely normal and don't mean your child isn't happy or doesn't feel safe at Mudgee Kids.
A predictable, consistent goodbye ritual can help children feel secure and confident as they move from home into their day.
๐ค Be their secure base
The Circle of Security approach describes parents and caregivers as a secure base from which children can confidently explore and a safe haven they can return to when they need comfort.
At drop-off, your child is learning:
"Mum/Dad goes, my educators are here to care for me, and my grown-up always comes back."
๐ฑ Try the same simple ritual each day
1. Connect
Get down to their level, offer a cuddle and acknowledge their feelings.
"I know saying goodbye is hard. You're safe, and your educators are here."
2. Keep it predictable
Use the same short sequence each morningโhang up the bag, cuddle, say hello to an educator, then goodbye.
3. Hand over confidently
Help your child connect with a familiar educator who can comfort and support them.
4. Say goodbye and leave
A special phrase, kiss, cuddle or high-five can become your child's familiar goodbye cue. Try not to repeatedly return for "one more cuddle", as this can make the transition harder.
5. Tell them when you'll return
Use something they understand:
"I'll come back after afternoon tea."
๐ It's okay if they cry
A child can be sad and still feel safe.
Our educators will acknowledge their feelings, provide comfort and support them to reconnect with play, friends and their environment.
The goal isn't a tear-free goodbye. It's helping your child build trust, predictability and a sense of belonging.
With time and consistency, the goodbye becomes familiar:
"I am safe. I belong here. My grown-up always comes back."
