Easing seperation anxiety when starting child care

Starting Childcare with Confidence

Starting childcare is a big milestone that can bring mixed emotions for both children and parents. These feelings are completely normal, and with thoughtful preparation, you can make the transition smoother.

Practice the routine. Visit the centre together beforehand so your child knows what to expect.

Talk about it. Discuss the fun activities and new friends they'll meet.

Create a goodbye ritual. A special hug, handshake, or phrase like "See you soon!" provides comfort and consistency.

Pack a comfort item. A little favourite toy, or sleep comforter or even a family photo in their bag can provide reassurance throughout the day.

Stay positive. Children sense your emotions, so speak confidently about this exciting new chapter.

Be patient. Tears at drop-off are normal and usually short-lived once you leave. We can call you shortly after drop-off and reassure you they have settled.

Remember, separation anxiety is temporary. With time, your child will grow confident and excited about their childcare community.
